CHENNAI: Days after chief minister M K Stalin urged the Union government to do away with Neet and other national level entrance examinations, AIADMK coordinator O Panneerselvam has also written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi making a similar appeal to abolish Neet as well as other common entrance examinations for all professional courses.
OPS said that instead of Neet and common entrances for other courses, students can be enrolled based on their higher secondary marks.
In a letter written on Sunday to the PM, OPS recalled that late chief minister J Jayalalithaa had strongly objected to Neet on several occasions and had enacted the Tamil Nadu Regulation of Admission in Professional Courses Act, 2006, to streamline admission in medical colleges.
After her demise, two bills were passed unanimously by the Tamil Nadu assembly in 2017 – Tamil Nadu Admission to MBBS and BDS Courses Bill and Tamil Nadu Admission to Post Graduate Courses in Medicine and Dentistry bill.
The bills were sent to the Union government for obtaining presidential assent.
“Unfortunately, that went in vain,’’ he said.
