Part of the Sahanallur Housing Unit collapsed in heavy rain

Coimbatore: Some of a three-story building in the Tamil Nadu Housing (TNHB) colony in Saranallur has collapsed on Friday after heavy rain for the past two days.
While the building accommodated 12 apartments, only two on the ground floor and one on the first floor was occupied.
Fortunately, residents are outside when the balcony and landing stairs collapsed.
TNHB Colony accommodates 960 apartments in total and most of them are in dilapidated condition.
They were built in 1984.
Half of the houses are still occupied, even though City Corporation issues a notification of occupants to empty, because the units are not feasible to live.
Said TNHB officials on damaged building wings, houses for rent for tenants.
He said most homeowners had moved for years after the unit was damaged and unusual.
The journey there were five resident associations in the colony, the official said the lack of consensus among them was delaying the process to destroy the houses and rebuild them.
Muthu Kumar, Coordinator, the Action Committee along with the Resident Association, said the conversation with TNHB to destroy the building.
He said TNHB had proposed to build five-storey buildings after dimming the existing three-story building, because it would be easy for TNHB to restore the cost of construction by selling additional units.
Former Saranlatur MLA N Karthik said the housing and development of Minister S Muthusamy, who had visited The colony two months ago, has assured to build a new house for people with personal partnerships.
