Kolkata: Operation Straight Spine (OSS) will immediately carry out complex spinal procedures for free for disadvantaged patients in Kolkata as part of the ‘spinal deformment operation mission’.
This project will take off at the Jagannath Gupta Institute of Medical Sciences and Hospital (Jimsh) in February next year.
The spinal surgeon from India and around the world will conduct a correction operation of the deformity at the Budge Budge Institute.
“Registration and filtering has begun for patients who will undergo surgery.
We also plan to conduct a screening camp in the district to choose patients who need this operation, but cannot afford,” said Ujjwal Debnath, Orthopedic Professor, Orthopedic & Spinal Operations Department at Jimsh.
This complex spinal surgery can cost between Rs 10-12 lakh in a private hospital.
A conference on February 20 will overtake the surgical workshop that must be attended by the faculty of international surgeons, anesthesis, nurses and paramedics from the United States, Britain, Europe besides them from India.
“Our plan is to operate on 10 patients with the spinal deformity here at Jimsh under this mission that is fully philanthropist.

Previously, OSS had touched two other institutions in Kolkata – Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratisthan in Kolkata, IPGMER & SSKM Hospital in 2020.
This is a charity mission project supported by Scoliosis Research Society, USA & World Orthopedic Concern, England.
Pandemi has stopped the project.
Now, with Covid scenarios increase, the project is back in the city.
