Patna: City air quality index (AQI), which turned ‘poor’ on Wednesday, it would likely deteriorate further with calm winds, low temperatures and anthropogenic activities that lead to the accumulation of pollutants.
According to the bulletin of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the AQI overall Patna was recorded at 235 at 4 pm on Wednesday, a sharp surge from 203 the day before.
It was an average AQI measured by five continuous ambient air quality monitoring stations in Bit-Patna (277), Eco Park (273), SK Memorial Hall (199), DRM Office-Khagaul (200), and Patna City (228 )).
Aqi between 0 and 50 is considered ‘good’, 51 and 100 ‘satisfying’, 101 and 200 ‘moderate’, 201 and 300 ‘poor’, 301 and 400 ‘very poor’, and 401 and 500 ‘severe’.
Aqi ‘Poor’ basically means that people may suffer from breathing problems with old air exposure.
Ashok Ghosh, Chairman of the Bihar State Pollution Control Agency (BSPCB), told this reporter that the transition in the weather and the use of firecrackers was the two main reasons for the increase in air pollution in Patna.
“We have asked the district government to ensure compliance with the National Green Tribunal order.
However, people still explode.
The only relief is that the lower number of patnits do it because they have understood how dangerous after the effect,” he added.
BSPCB is a 14-day special monitoring drive to learn toxic pollutant behavior during Diwali and Chhath.
Four monitoring stations have been installed at Parivesh Bhawan, Beltron Bhawan, I-T and Cancer Bundaran.
Ghosh said, “On the basis of the results of special monitoring drives, BSPCB will prepare reports on air quality during Diwali and CHHATH.
Thus, an advisor will be issued and corrective action taken next year.” He added, “Now, metal like tin, tin , Strontium, cadmium, barium and many hazardous chemicals are used in firecrackers.
