Chennai: Distribution of free tickets for women in the city of government or city buses in all states since Monday has increased their footsteps with around 20%.
While women contribute 40% of commuters in these buses in normal times, more than 78 lakh women travel in 7,291 buses in the last three days, almost 60% of total protection, show official data.
Transport Minister R Rajakannappan said that to ensure a safer travel from female passengers in Chennai, the government plans to install CCTV cameras in 2,500 Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) in RS 71 Crore using the NIRBHaya fund.
The Department of Transportation has made such an announcement several times in the past during the budget session, said Activist R Rengachari.
“But so far it doesn’t materialize.
We hope the new government to make it happen,” he said.
Since Monday, even footsteps even transvestites (5,741) and diverse (51,615) in MTC and other city buses, with MTC decided to operate more buses in the high demand area.
Until last week, it was close to seven lakh people traveling with 2,300 MTC buses every day.
This week, 400 buses are more operated and the amount is expected to rise in the coming week with more relaxation expected, said a senior MTC official.
As far as the bus to Puducherry, TNSTC Villupuram operates 364 buses to the United area and almost half of them depart from Terminus Bus Koyambedu.
The Minister of Transportation also announced that the plan was ongoing to continue the manufacture of water bottles at the Institute of Road Transport (IRT), Gummidipoondi.
About 80,000 bottles of water ‘Amma’ one liter produced in this IRT unit and sold on buses standing throughout the state for ₹ 10 each.
But since last June, sales stopped at Tamil Nadu.
Along with a one-liter bottle, we are studying the possibility of making a half liter bottle too, said Rajakannappan.
