Rio de Janeiro: Pause in negotiations to save Iran’s nuclear agreement with the world’s power has placed an international atomic energy body in “uncomfortable position,” his boss told AFP on Monday.
An Iranian official announced on Saturday that talks in Vienna would not continue before the new government took office in August, after the presidential election last month was won by the Ultra-Conservative Ebrahim Relision.
“We still have a number of questions, the problem we are trying to clarify with Iran, and we have to wait and start again with a new team when they are in the office,” said Director General of IAEA Rafael Grossi told AFP in an interview Rio de Janeiro during an official visit to Brazil.
The announcement that the process will be continued only after the Relision takes over “makes us in a rather uncomfortable situation,” he added.
“I’m talking about agency, I don’t know about the others, but I think they prefer to negotiate than waiting.” The Islamic Republic has been involved in indirect negotiations with the United States since April in Vienna to revive the troubled 2015 nuclear agreement.
The agreement was officially known as a joint comprehensive action plan offering Tehran international sanctions assistance with rewards to limit its nuclear program, but Ditorpo in 2018 when former US President Donald Trump retreated from it and gave sanctions.
Trump’s replacement, Joe Biden has signaled his readiness to return to an agreement but his government has also voiced frustration that grew when the conversation dragged.
“We remain open to continue and ultimately to complete Jcpoa discussions in a productive way,” said the Foreign Ministry spokesman Ned told reporters in Washington.
“We realize, along with the international community, the advantages of a mechanism that ensures permanently and certain that Iran cannot obtain nuclear weapons,” he said.
“We are also clear that this offer will not be on the table without limits.” Iran has pushed hard to eliminate all sanctions but Biden administration said it was only open to relief in the steps taken on its nuclear program, not on other issues including human rights and support for regional militants.
The sixth round talk concluded on June 20.
They were broken by the European Union, such as Britain, Chinese France, Germany and Russia remained in agreement.
Petuman President Hassan Rouhi has repeatedly promised him to get the United States to lift sanctions before the end of his term but last week showed this no longer possible and negotiations would not be finished before he left the office.
The Relision will take over from Rouhi in August 5.
The highest political power in Iran leaned on the highest leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who gave the green light for the original nuclear agreement and attempts to revive.
