Rio de Janeiro: Pause in negotiations to save Iran’s nuclear agreement with the world’s power has placed an international atomic energy body in “uncomfortable position,” his boss told AFP on Monday.
An Iranian official announced on Saturday that talks in Vienna would not continue before the new government took office in August, after the presidential election last month was won by the Ultra-Conservative Ebrahim Relision.
“We still have a number of questions, the problem we are trying to clarify with Iran, and we have to wait and start again with a new team when they are in the office,” said Director General of IAEA Rafael Grossi told AFP in an interview Rio de Janeiro during an official visit to Brazil.
The announcement that the process will be continued only after the Relision takes over “makes us in a rather uncomfortable situation,” he added.
“I’m talking about agency, I don’t know about the others, but I think they prefer to negotiate than waiting.” The Islamic Republic has been involved in indirect negotiations with the United States since April in Vienna to revive the troubled 2015 nuclear agreement.
