Gurgaon: Metropolitan Gurgaon Development Authority (GMDA) aims to contain illegal extraction of around 20 million liters per day (MLD) groundwater with the supply of pipes to 18 new sectors along the Dwarka toll road.
About 1.45 lakh people live in sectors 81 to 99 and largely depend on Borewell or unauthorized personal tankers that provide groundwater extracted illegally without regular water connections.
GMDA supplies water to nine housing communities in these sectors today.
Vikas Malik Executive Engineer said the authorities could easily meet the current 25 MLD demand in these sectors with the current water supply distribution network, which was set at a cost of Rs 76 Crore.
He said the city and state meeting departments have issued a license for 229 projects in the sector 81 to 99, where OCS certificates (OCS) have been given to 56.
projects with OCS can apply with water connections.
“About nine developers have received sanctions connections, while others are ongoing.
With the supply of GMDA, we will be able to check extraction of around 20 MLD from ground water, which is the main concern today,” Malik added.
Talking about challenges, he said, the tanker mafia targets a new water pipe laid and destroys it because it affects their business.
He said the damaged mafia pipelines in the sector 86, 89 and 94 several times last month, caused a disruption of water supply in the area.
“We have written to the police chief to keep the intimate authorities in this area to secure assets created by GMDA and take strict action on violators to ensure services that are free to residents,” he said.
GMDA Chief Executive Sudhir Rajpal told TOI that the canal water supply for all housing communities is the main priority of authority, followed by free waste and better drainage.
“Our team has worked on a water distribution network.
This will offer highly needed assistance for citizens sectors 81 to 99 and examine the thinning of ground water too,” he said.
Estimates around RS 226 Crore have been approved for distribution networks in three packages in all sectors 58 to 115 and work is taking place, he added.
