Coimbatore: Plastic bags use a single, which has been banned by the State Government in January 2019, is being used openly by traders in the city with a civic body left by a mute audience.
It should be noted that City Corporation is entrusted with the task of enforcing a ban when it comes in valid more than two years ago.
According to city residents, the ban was carried out in letters and spirits at first, bringing real changes in their environment.
All government institutions also take a lot of awareness campaigns about the need to embrace the underlying bag that is environmentally friendly and stop using a single plastic bag.
Residents said they were encouraged to use cloth bags for shopping for food and other items at that time the prohibition was applied strictly.
“When the Covid-19 pandemic hit the country, the officials stopped cracking into stores using or selling plastic items that were prohibited.
As a result, a single plastic bag used a strong back.
Traders did not ask us to carry a cloth bag with us at this time , “said one of the residents.
Increased use of plastic bags that are prohibited are reflected in the generation of waste as well.
Used plastic bags can be seen disposed of on the roadside, trash cans and waterways.
Storm storm waterways storm is a common sight at City.G Amutha, a resident of Nanjundapuram, said the shop owner did not use plastic items after the prohibition of fear of being arrested and punished by corporate officials.
“When officials stop drives specifically for storing tabs on the use of such items, the shop owner is widely used, polluting the city.” Referring to rampant use of plastic bags that were prohibited, Sheik Saleem, a citizen of Ukkadam, said all that good work by officials for months together had flowed into the sewer.
“Now it will require another round of awareness to curb its use.” A luxury shopkeeper of Gandhipuram said while many alternatives for single plastic bags were used, they were all expensive.
“We used to offer fabric bags, but our customers don’t want to pay extra for it.
So, we are forced to use a single plastic bag again.” A health official with City Corporation said they checked the use of drug bags every time they checked the store to ensure compliance against the Covid-19 protocol.
“More important will be given to enforcement of plastic prohibitions in the coming days.”
