Pune: Of the 42 new cases the previous week to only 16 weeks ago (July 15 to July 21), the level of mukormycosis detection among patients restored Covid had seen a sharp decline in the metropolitan area of Pune (PMR).
16 new cases took the total number of mucormycosis cases (CAM) related to Covid to 1,271 for the past three and a half months.
Experts said the case had fallen since the beginning of July.
“The fall of post-covid musicycosis cases is of course encouraging.
Many major drugs such as Amphotericin B also help patients recover faster,” said Health Officer Bhagwan Pawar.
In May, PMR had recorded 421 cam cases.
In June, he had 426.
In July so far, only 69 people were diagnosed with invasive fungal infections, which mainly affected the sinuses.
Of the total 1,271 patients, 789 had recovered.
At present, 299 patients underwent treatment in various hospitals in PMR.
Although new cases have dropped dramatically, disease recurrence is a problem that arises.
“Patients who need revised operations appear in a fairly large number because some of them (20%) face recurrent days or months after recovery,” said Sassoon Hospital’s THT Surgeon Samir Joshi.
What is more worrying is the fact that a large number of these patients require recurrent surgical permissions (debridemen) even in areas such as the frontal sinus, where recurrence should not occur.
This shows incomplete permits of damaged networks during the first operation, experts said.
The use of drug therapy, including amphotericin b injection, is also the key to preventing recurrence.
“To prevent recurrence, disease control must be achieved correctly before changing amphotericin B for step therapy with oral posaconazol.
Apart from incomplete debridement, the breakthrough mukor can occur if the optimal drug level in the blood is not achieved,” said the infectious disease of expert Sanjay Pujari , Member of the National Covid Task Force.
Postaconazole levels must be achieved in the blood and must be measured three to five days after starting treatment, Pujari suggests.
172 of 1,271 patients had given up on complications associated with cam in the district so far, contributing 14% death rate.
