Bhubaneswar: Police Commissionerance is likely to send a proposal to the state government who is looking for a power delegation to the traffic police to punish motorbors jumping red light signals in post traffic in Bhubaneswar.
At present, strength lies in the regional transportation office enforcement forces (RTO) in the state.
Although Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited (BSCL) has installed a camera in 13 locations in the capital city to detect violations of traffic rules, the police have not been able to take offenders due to lack of power under the 2019 motor vehicle law.
“We have received CCTV camera feed from red light violations every day from the BSCL control room.
But it is of no use for us because our hands are tied.
Only the RTO staff are empowered to remove Challans to those who jump red lights.
But BSCL does not share feeds with RTO is therefore not the main traffic enforcer agent, “said a senior police officer.
The MV Law was changed by the steep criminal provisions began to apply throughout the country on September 1, 2019.
Jump signal red light interesting RS 5,000 fine under the part 184 (a) of the MV action was changed.
The government has empowered the police to enforce around 11 types of traffic violation regulations under the law of MV.
“We will submit a proposal before the Department of Transportation asks them to delegate the power of punishing a red light signal violator to the traffic police in Bhubaneswar alone,” said the senior police officer.
In March this year, the government empowers cross-islands of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack to impose a fine based on the MV Act.
Previously, only officers at the rank of assistant sub-inspector (ASI) and above were empowered to impose a fine based on the MV Act.
BSCL, which has developed various infrastructure related to traffic in Bhubaneswar, is likely to submit a smart city traffic management system to police commissioners immediately.
Underneath, BSCL has installed a public address system on 25 traffic posts and detection devices of traffic violations in 25 locations (13 to detect red light violations and 12 for violations).
In addition, the traffic accident recording system has also been applied to know the cause of the accident.
