Hyderabad: The police did not have the power to seize drunk driver vehicles.
Instead, they can allow people who accompany who do not have alcohol, to drive a vehicle.
This was stated by Justice K Lakshman from the Telangana High Court in his order after hearing a number of petitions submitted by vehicle owners, who challenged seizures and waited for them to return.
“If no one accompanies the drunk driver, then the police must notify relatives or friends of the drunken male to take care of vehicles,” read.
The judge added that if no one advanced to take a vehicle, only then the police could keep the vehicle stay at the nearest police station or other secure custody and had to release it to the owner or authorized person.
The judge, however, agreed with the Advisor to the State House Department, the opinion of G Srikanth Reddy that a drunk driver should not be allowed to drive from the point where he was caught.
