Nagpur: Following in the footsteps of Freedom Fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak who have started Sarvajanik (Public) Ganeshotsav to unite the community, the city police reach residents during the festival to maintain the theme ‘harmonious communal’.
On Thursday, Sakkardara, Lakadganj, Pachpaoli, Ganeshpeth, Kapil Nagar and the Imambada police station have organized Mahaprasad and invited local residents, various committe members, community representatives, ‘Police Mitras’ and other personalities.
Sources said Mayor Dayashankar Tiwari visited the Ganeshpeth police station to meet with the police and members of the active police committee.
Through the Mahaprasad initiative, the city police also saw the informant base and support group among residents who worked as interfaces between police and the community during the crisis.
The police ensure that Covid norms are followed and informal interactions are held among limited invitations consisting of people from various communities, trust and socio-economic background.
Amitesh Kumar City Police Chief, who has asked the police station to follow Covid norms while regulating Mahaprasad, said the opportunity served the purpose of building a communal harmony atmosphere.
“I tried to get fair feedback from the invitation about the police and overcome their complaints.
Such interactions develop mutual understanding between the police and the public,” said CP who attended programs at the Ganeshpeth Police Station, Pachpaoli and Imambada.
Senior Inspector Amol Deshmukh Police Station Kapil Nagar is optimistic about the results after people from different communities and backgrounds participate in the Mahaprasad there.
Senior Inspector Sanjay Mende said Covid norms were strictly enforced with “polite reminders” to the invitation.
“Selected and active members of the Mohalla Committee (environment), Shantata (Peace) and Dakshata (vigilance), who have met the police separately, comes together on the general platform to interact freely with us,” he said.
