Kolkata: Police question the taxi driver in connection with the 66-year-old jewelry murder, Shantilal Vaid, a luxury condominium resident at Lee Road in Bhowanipor.
The police said that the main suspect from the murder case had ordered a taxi to collect a ransom from the relatives of the victim at the South Gate of the Victoria Memorial Hall before reaching the Howrah station.
The driver claimed that the defendant had ordered a taxi from Burrabazar at around 9:30 a.m.
After collecting ransom, taxis took the Cathedral road, Park Street, Esplanade and Strand Road to reach the HOWRA station, according to the police.
“We passed CCTV recording around Victoria Memorial Hall and took pictures in a taxi rented by the defendant.
Jorabagan police and Jorabagan Guard traced Cabby from the Lane Mallik Jadunath,” said an officer.
The police suspect that the defendant, whose name and identity has been circulated to the police in other countries, may have killed Vaid before making a ransom calling and raising money.
Going with the main autopsy report showing signs of the struggle, the police suspected that the defendant might face a rigid resistance while committing a crime.
Police said the defendant had visited the guest house before.
So, when he walked out of the guesthouse after killing jewelry, no staff had suspicions.
“Some Guest House staff claimed to have seen Vaid with the defendant inside the hotel on Monday morning – he was found killed a few hours later.
The police confirmed whether the defendant had booked a room at the Guest House in the second week of February.
The police also checked whether the defendant had booked in the guest house Others.
“We tried to ascertain whether the defendant had become regular visitors to Kolkata and often met Vaid,” said an officer.
A separate team is working on vaid’s call notes and examining the footprint of money to ascertain whether the defendant and the victim have monetary business transactions and whether Vaid has VAID Business relations with victims.
