Coimbatore: Pongal celebrations seem to have left a large number of garbage on city streets and civil bodies have collected 500 tons more waste than usual in the last four days.
A City Corporation official said while the average garbage collection stands at 1,000 tons a day, the number has jumped with 100 tons during the pongal celebration.
He said additional vehicles and Earthmover were used to collect garbage.
Garbage piles can still be found in many areas in the city.
Residents said the garbage had accumulated on the pocket road, where officials did not pay attention.
Sanjiv Kumar, a resident of Kurichi, said the gathering of the doorway waste had jammed during the pongal, forcing people to dispose of garbage on the streets.
Anada wild dogs also increase because of the same thing.
“Trash is not cleaned for three days in our area and garbage piles are not just a scene, but also cause health problems.” V Durga, a resident of Urumandampalyam, said he had taken a garbage problem that was not clear to corporate officials a few days ago, but it didn’t work.
