Chennai: Chief Minister M K Stalin on Saturday visited families living in Manali Pudhu Nagar, which was affected due to the release of surplus water from the Poondi reservoir, which was drained through Kosasthalayar and flooded housing colonies in Hulu.
Stalin visited Vadivudaiamman Nagar, Mahalakshmi Nagar and Vivekanandha, where around 25 families from Irular colonies in the Sadayankuppam area had been given a temporary residence after their homes were under water.
A local Ettitiyappan said every time the surplus of water was released into the Kosasthalayar River, many residential areas in this region were flooded.
“Many politicians, including the main minister visited our area.
But we don’t know when the rehabilitation steps will begin, and stagnant water will be pumped.” Irular colonies have 40 families who have only been provided by concrete houses.
The rest is still alive in the hut.
All families have been affected by flooding, said Ettiyappan.
PWD on Saturday reduced the release of a surplus of water from Poondi after the number of streams dropped.
On Friday, it was more than 37,000 cubic feet of water per second (cusecs) and the entry flow of more than 42,000 cusec water.
Just because of an increase in inflows, the authorities must release water from the Poondi reservoir, said a PWD engineer.
Like on Saturday night, inflow at the Poondi reservoir has dropped to 23,721 cusecs.
From this, the authorities have released 23,506 cusec water.
With a reduction in inflows and rainfall in the reservoir and the catchment area, the release of a surplus of water from the reservoir will be reduced in the next few days, officially more.
