Tokyo: An athlete in Japan and five Olympic workers, most of the contractors, have tested the positive Coronavirus, said the Tokyo 2020 organizer said Thursday, only more than a week before the opening ceremony.
The news came when eight staff at the Japanese hotel hosting the Brazilian Judo Team tested positive, and staff members from the Sevens Rugby Russian team were hospitalized after a positive exam.
The case underlines the next challenge for the organizers, even though they note that only a handful of cases have been detected so far among more than 8,000 people who have entered Japan since July 1.

They did not provide more details about the identity of six people.
Elsewhere, officials said eight staff at a Japanese hotel which hosted the Brazilian Olympic Judo team had tested the positive Coronavirus.
The hotel cluster was found in the city of Hamamastu, West Tokyo, during the screening of a virus carried out before about 30 members of the Brazilian Judo delegation arrived on Saturday.
None of the infected staff came into contact with the athletes, said local health and sports officials.
A family member of one of the infected hotel workers also tested positive officials, Hamamatsu added.
Separately, a staff member with the Russian Rugby Sevens team was hospitalized after a positive test, an official at the host they were Munakata in West Japan told AFP.
Team 16 athletes and 10 staff members landed at Tokyo airport on July 10, and did not have close contact with local officials or residents since then, he said.
The rest of the team is now quarantined in their accommodation, but if they test negative on Thursday, they will be able to continue training at the beginning of Friday, officially more.
The news is equipped with more than a week until the game is open for events that are mostly behind the closed door, with strict anti-infection steps placed on athletes, officials and journalists.
