Nagpur: Like Mukormycosis, Gangren is another post-covid complication reported by many patients, say doctors.
Covid has a tendency that is known to increase blood clotting.
It also causes a heart attack because the clot that blocks blood supply.
Some lumps also block the supply of blood to the legs, which leads to gangrene cases.
After the blood supply was cut off, the limbs began to rot, leading to gangrene in medical terms.
If it is reported too late, the limbs must be amputated, the doctor said.
Toi also reports arterial blocks that lead to visual loss.
Usually, gangrene occurs after an injury, when the blood supply to the organ is cut off.
With Covid, it happens to patients who have recovered from infection too.
The doctor who treated the case said in the worst case of amputation was a last attempt, but a number of patients had been treated with procedures such as angioplasty too.
Dr.
Shoeb Nadeem, who was attached to Alexis Hospital, said he did two amputations.
The patients from outside Nagpur.
At the same time, Angioplasty has helped save other patient limbs.
As it happens with heart disease patients, stents are used to restore blood flow in the arteries, which are blocked due to lumps, he said.
The orthopedic surgeon Dr.
Sanjeev Chaudhary said separately from Gangren, post-covid lumps lead to the avascular necrosis of the femoral head.
It affects the supply of blood to the hip joint ball, the motion inhibits and also causes extraordinary pain.
Patients must undergo hip replacement.
“In general, this disease is associated with alcoholism, the use of steroids and sickle cell disease.
However, now blood freezing caused by Covid is also seen as one of the reasons.
Hip replacement is a drug in such cases,” Chaudhary said, which too confirm has found such cases.
This disease is also found in women, where generally alcoholism can be ruled out, he said.
Patients recovering from Covid must regularly examine the tendency of freezing through tests such as D-Dimer and other diagnostics for coagulation profiles, he said former Dean of the Medical Government and Hospital (GMCH) Dr.
Sajal Mitra said Post Covid Gangren was a fact.
“There are some cases but of course not at a worry rate,” he said.
Dr Avinash Gawande, GMCH medical supervisor, also confirmed the incident.
“Two patients I know have developed gangrene.
One of them has to undergo amputation and others suffer from dry gangrene on his finger.
Such cases have been reported in the government hospital too,” he said.
