Post-covid scourge? The case of 'bone death' soared in Maharashtra

Mumbai: There is a surge in the case of ‘bone death’ or avascular necrosis among post-covid patients throughout the country, including Mumbai, according to orthopedic specialists.
The day after TII wrote about three cases of avascular necrosis (AVN) reported in the medical journal, the BMJ case, from Hinduja Hospital at Mahim, various doctors reported similar findings in their daily practice.
Covid patients treated with steroids during their old workplace are common factors among those affected.
“At our daily outpatient clinic, we see one or two fresh cases of avascular necrosis among post-covid patients,” said Prof.
Dr S Mohanty from KEM Hospital.
Orthopedic surgeons based in Nagpur Dr.
Sushrut Babulkar said he took care of up to 40 patients with AVN in the past five weeks.
“All previously suffered covid and were given steroids,” he said.
Ahmednagar Orthopedic Surgeon Dr.
Vijay Deshpande, who suffered from Covid on August 2020, was he recovered from the operation for the avascular necrosis.
“Before my operation on June 18, I operated in 17 patients, all post-covid, for avascular necrosis between May 1 and June 17,” he told Ti by telephone.
“In the Pre-Covid period, I will operate in two or three cases like that in a month, and now I have done 17 weeks.” Covid Deshpande treatment stretches for a month and he needs a prolonged use of steroids after developing a slightly known neurological disorder, Parsonage Turner syndrome, which causes severe pain in the upper arm and shoulders.
This encouraged him to undergo screening; MRI scanning shows ‘bone death’ tells the story of the thigh bone.
The doctor is afraid of the AVN case will increase in the coming days.
“AVN developed five to 12 months after steroid exposure.
During the second wave, the use of irrational steroids was reported throughout the country.
Cases will begin to rise in one or two months,” said Babulkar.
However, the right trigger for this increase in the case of AVN is not clear.
“We must learn whether it is the SARS-COV-2 virus that leads to avascular necrosis or whether it is used steroids.
The combination of these two factors can also be the answer,” Mohanty said, who was the President of the Indian Arthroplasty Association.
The unit at KEM Hospital has begun to maintain files at AVN among Covid survivors.
“We also have to assign if these patients have an early stages of necrosis that deteriorate with covid and steroids,” he added.
On July 2, Medical Director of Hindu Hospital, the article Dr.
Sanjay Agarwala was published in highlighting the ‘BMJ Cases’ Avn among three doctors under 40 years in two months suffering from Covid.
AVN disproportionately affects young people, and as the second wave affects more young people than the first wave in 2020, there is a reason to worry.
“If covid victims have hip pain or thighs, don’t pop paracetamol.
Get the earliest screening,” said Babulkar.
