The UGC directs VC Indian universities to frame the rules and norms that are appropriate in connection with the provision of maternity leave and relaxation related to the presence of female students in undergraduate programs (UG) and Postgraduate (PG).
Most of the central universities have placed these provisions, first introduced by UGC in 2016, in its place and praised this in addition to the field of academics.
Guidelines are introduced
UMA Shankar Pandey, PhD Supervisor, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Calcutta University, in accordance with the provisions of the 2016 UGC, female candidates can be given maternity or child care leave once in all of their duration of MPhil and PhD up to 240 days.
“Provisions, which are strikingly available in other sectors, are lost in academics, he added.
Safe! You have managed to throw your voice to see the results of why UGC feels need to remind universities from this provision recently, BJ RAO, Chancellor Deputy, University of Hyderabad (UOH), “Many guidelines are issued every year.
General reminders need to be communicated from time to time To ensure the same coherence and acceptance by all stakeholders.
”
Rao added that this guideline was more relevant to PhD rather than other PG courses.
“In any regular course, if a female student must leave maternity leave, he will only miss certain courses, which he can know so he rejoets.
However, a PhD student will lose time deadlines, which will affect the overall academic journey, “He said.
Express number
In accordance with the academic section in UOH, from a total of 1,533 PhD students in the current academic year, 668 are women.
Over the past three years, 16 female students have used the provision of maternity leave / medical leave.
At the University of Delhi (DU), there are a total of 4011 PhD students, where 2093 are women.
Yogesh Singh, Representative of Chancellor, DU, notifies, “Since the beginning of the provisions, only about 10% of students of PhD / MPhil women have used it.”
JN Baliya, Head of Department, Education and Communication Studies of Mass & New Media, Central University of Jammu (CUJ), said, “This Academic Year, I Mentoring 21 Bachelor of PhD, where about 80% are women.
At present, two are maternity leave While around three others have used this option in recent years.
”
Various advantages
Baliya said that before this provision, a female PhD student in the field of science and social science suffered.
“While science students must spend a lot of hours in the laboratory with hazardous chemicals, social science students are required to conduct field research.
In both cases, female students who are in the way the family suffers health-wise.
Thus, this provision has acted as a boost for life their personal and academic, “he said.
Both the ease of psychological or passion for academic excellence, there have been positive changes because of this provision, said Rao.
“This is an assumption that takes a break from the PhD may affect women.
However, I have repeatedly observed that female students from their pregnancy breaks to continue their PhD to make extraordinary efforts to prove their academic superiority.
Thus, I believe that quality Research has been positively affected, “he said.
According to Singh, because of an emphasis on international rankings, the focus on PhD has improved manifold.
“If the correct ecosystem is given to PhD scholars, the dropout rate between them stands to decrease, which will automatically increase the number of research and quality of our research.
Previously, the drop-out rate among PhD students was around 20%, which has been Decreased after this provision.
The belief that their university will support them is a big booster, “he said.
Pandey said that many PhD scholars were on various scholarships that produced monthly allowances.
“Previously, females that used to take a break from their PhD were missed on their allowances.
However, posting the UGC provisions, this has changed and made the lives of many PhD students easier,” he said.
