Coimbatore: City Hospital has succeeded in carrying out operations in men with only 910g of men who are born prematurely with heart defects known as patent ductus arteriosus.
This is a condition where there is a continuous relationship between two blood vessels that leave the heart , causing too much blood flow to the lungs.

Child is not mature.
“Ductus arteriosus is a normal umbilical artery that supplies oxygen-rich blood to the fetus.
It usually closes itself in a few days of delivery,” said Dr.
Vinoth Doraisamy, a senior consultant for cardiologists in the hospital.
“However, premature babies are vulnerable to the closure of this artery and the consequences are too much blood flow to the lungs.” Babies, who are in Nicu for several weeks have developed lung infections.
Even after antibiotic therapy courses, babies depend on ventilators because of the arteriosus duct patent.
“That’s when we decided to surgically close the connecting artery,” said Dr.
C Ananthanaranyanan, a consultant senior cardioracic surgeon in the hospital.
“But technically challenging to shift babies to the operating theater, which is on a different floor.
The baby’s organ system is very mature so shifting to different floors can cause hypothermia or low body temperature with serious consequences.
The lungs of the child are also in conditions bad so it can’t survive even minimal tube movements during the shift.
So, we set the operating theater settings in the NICU itself.
“The hospital seals the baby part of the ICU cabin, and the surgeon must operate a baby on the ICU bed, which cannot be played makes it physically difficult.
The procedure for one hour is smooth.
“Babies slowly recover,” said Dr.
Ananthanasayan.
