New Delhi: President of RAM Nath Kovind on Saturday called Manual sculping ’embarrassing practice’ and said that eradication is not only the government’s responsibility but also the community and citizens.
Kovind presented the Swachh Survekshan 2021 Awards organized by the Ministry of Housing and urban affairs in the national capital.
Speaking at the event, said the President, “Expert Swayachh Survekshan award has special meaning because it comes in the midst of the celebration of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’.” Kovind quoted Mahatma Gandhi “Cleanliness was next to piety” and said, “According to him cleanliness must be a top priority.
This priority of Gandhiji has been brought forward by the Government of India as a mass movement through the Mission of Swachh Bharat.

The President noted that Safai Mitras and sanitation workers continue to provide their services even during covid pandemics.
He said that the government is committed to ensuring that life has no risky sanitation workers due to unsafe cleaning practices.
He appreciated the initiative of ‘Safai Mitra Surakha Challenge’ from the Ministry of Housing and urban affairs which have begun at 246 cities with the aim of promoting mechanical cleaning of sewers and septic tanks.
He noted that good examples came out of the idea of ’waste to wealth’ and many active beginners in these areas.
He said that the right scheme can be developed to encourage entrepreneurship and investment in these fields.
