Chennai: illegally raw waste disposal into the cooum river by private tankers continues to take place in Mogappair despite the intervention of the National Green Tribunal.
During the past week, residents had caught a camera tanker parked along the bridge from George Rathinam Road in Mogappair in the morning and releasing waste that was not treated into the river.
The vehicle registration number from several trucks is: TN 16 BC 6860, 09 AE 3064 and TN 2538.
NGT Southern Zone (SZ), hearing a similar case in the past, has asked the state transportation department to cancel the truck permit like that.
Ideally, waste trucks must dispose of waste at the local pump station run by Chennai Metro Air and Sewage Supply Board (CMWSSB).
But only 35-odd from more than 200 waste trucks that use the facility, according to officials.
The remaining personal tankers, which charge Rs 500 to RS 800 per travel from apartments and commercial companies, polluted the environment in the daytime.
Mogappair residents accused the complaints committed to local police about this had happened without supervision.
“The police must increase patrols along this stretch or install CCTV cameras at various points along the rainwater canal to stop such violations.
If not, the illegality will continue and rainwater will not flow correctly.
This is a health hazard too,” said Mohan Babu, a resident of Mogappair East.
Earlier this month, Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) told NGT-SZ that he had removed 23,527 tons of city solid waste from the Cooum River Bank and that the garbage boom was installed in eight different locations to gather floating waste in the river.
CMWSSB told the court that the sewerage pipeline work near the Anna Nagar and Mogappair area was completed, and that efforts were being carried out to form a more modular (STPS) waste treatment plant.
Referring to this, said Babu while the state government spent crores on the ‘integrated River River River Project’, the offenders were allowed to be free of Scott.
The state agent must slap the severe fine on such an offender, he said.
