Bengaluru: senior gravitational waves and cosmology expert Prof Tarun Souradeep, on Thursday took over as director of the Raman Research Institute (RRI), one of the main research unit of India.
Describes RRI as an institution with a legacy of a very rich heritage and unique scientific, Souradeep said: “It is an honor to be at the helm of RRI.
It has maintained the balance of research top-end sound, along with the technological capabilities that holds great promise for efforts future border on par with the best in the world.
“Souradeep previously was a professor and chair of the Department of Physics at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune.
He has a PhD from the inter-university center for astronomy and astrophysics (IUCAA) and a postdoctoral fellow in the group of high-energy physics to Kansas State University and the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics.
“The area of expertise is the cosmology and gravitational wave physics and astronomy, and he has made important contributions and managed to create a strong and sustained effort to overcome the problems on par with international research,” said RRI in a statement.
Impact of the Indian team led by it is widely acknowledged, both in the field of cosmology with microwave experiment frontline microwave background (CMB), and the emerging field of gravitational wave astronomy (GW).
He is a spokesman (science) to the laser interferometer gravitational-wave (ligo) -India and secretary of the board members Ligo-India scientific management.
Together with Prof.
Bala Iyer (formerly RRI), he is one of the main proponents Ligo-India project in 2011.
“He is the recipient of numerous awards including Fellowship SWARNajayanti, Gruber Cosmology Prize in 2016 and 2018 and presents a special breakthrough.
For 2016.
He is a fellow of the National Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Sciences of India.
His election to the fellowship of the international community about general relativity and gravitation is a testament to its establishment among its international peers, “added RRI.
RRI is the Autonomous Institute funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology (DST) and is the main research field of astronomy and astrophysics; light and matter physics; lightweight material condensation and theoretical physics.
