Pune: The State Prison Department has submitted a proposal for five more prisons in Mumbai, Palghar, Pune, Hingoli and Gondia to reduce prison.
This includes a multi-floor prison in Mumbai (near Chembur).
“In the past 10 years, the population in state prisons has increased to 36,000 of 24,000.
The collective capacity of all prisons in the state is 24,000,” said Sunil Ramanand, Director General of Police (Prison) on Tuesday.
“The population of 36,000 does not include prisoners released on guarantees or special conditional liberation to the prison decomposes after the spread of Covid-19 infection.
So far we have released 13,115 inmates from different prisons,” Ramanand said.
“We also aimed to start the prison colony open for women in prisoners at the similar lines of Atpadi prison in Sangli,” he said.
“The state government has given us 25 hectares of land in Palghar to build prisons, while 10 hectares of land have been given near Chembur for prison in Mumbai.
In Hingoli, we have 42 hectares of land.
We intend to build prisons in Jerawada based on public partnerships Private (PPP), and we have received land parcels in the Gondia, “he said.
“Arthur Road Jail has a capacity of 800 inmates, but he has doubled the number of prisoners who nest there.
We will make facilities for 5,000 inmates in place near Chembur.
This prison will be built on the Miami Prison line, US.
This will be a prison for the bottom inmates , “he said.
“The second Jerawada prison will have a capacity of 2,500 inmates,” he said.
