New Delhi: a group of snacks and street vendors held a protest on Saturday to demand the reopening weekly market in the national capital.
The protesters, led by the Joint Hawkers (HJAC) Action Committee, said the AAP or the center must allow the reopening of the weekly market or vendor to be compensated by Delhi’s minimum wage of RS 18,000.
At present, one weekly market per day per city zone is allowed in Delhi.
Ashwani Bagri, President Hjac, accused that no street vendors have received financial assistance from the Delhi government.
“The weekly market was closed for six months last year and more than three months this year.
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has promised to give RS 20,000 each to street vendors to help them financially, but we have told anything,” Bagri said , He added that more than five lakh vendors have struggled with poverty, and they “don’t have money to pay rent, their family medical bills, and costs for their children’s education”.
“Therefore, we demanded that we be allowed to open the weekly market or we are compensated by the Minimum Wage of Rs 18,000,” he said.
Bagri also said that if their demands were not fulfilled, the vendor would be “Gherrao home cm, showing a black flag at his public meeting and protesting on the streets with their families”.
Police Delhi said the protest was carried out peacefully and no one was detained.
