Pune: 63 turtles saved airlifted to assam

Pune: A total of 63 turtles belonging to a rare species were flown from Pune Maharashtra and flown to Assam, to be released into their natural habitat, a forest official said on Thursday.
Kura-turtle endangered species such as Indian roof turtles, crowned river turtles, brown turtles and river terrapins were saved during various seizures in the state, officials said.
The exercise was a joint initiative by the Ministry of Forestry State and the Survival Turtle Alliance, he said, “This is the first time the species of extinct and rare-ended turtles are being sent by airways to be released into their natural habitat in the northeastern state,” Rahul said Patil, the Deputy Forest Conservator (Division Pune).
When reaching Guwahati, turtles will be submitted to the Turtle Survival Alliance and Forest officials from Assam and the newer will be released in their natural habitat, the official said.
Of the 63 turtles, 55 with Indian herpetological societies, Katraj in Pune, and eight have been with resq Amal Trust, it was stated.
