Pune: The rural police claimed to have broken the five-member gang suspected of being behind the theft of Cigarette Box worth Rs 5,17 lakh from Shikrapur in October.
The gang hijacked a truck carrying a cigarette consignment to Ahmednagar and then stole the boxes.
Anil Wagh (32), the truck driver, approached Shikrapur police on October 2 and filed fir.
Wagh told the police that he had collected cigarette consignments from a warehouse in Shikrapur and was on his way to the Ahmednagar district to give birth.
“Around 3am, when he grabbed Vadaothan, five people, traveled with a pickup truck, forced him to stop.
They dragged him out of the truck and made him sit in a pickup truck.
One of them took charges of trucks and left,” said Senior Inspector Ashok Shelke from the local crime branch.
He said that the suspects then dropped a wafet along the Pune-Ahmednagar highway and left.
Wagh found an empty truck left a little far away.
Shelke said that when investigating this case, Constable Mangesh Thigale received a tip-off that was Santosh Pawar and Swapnil Kandrup from Shirur had carried out their robbery with the help of their three legs.
“We put a trap and took a duo to prisoners along with pickup trucks,” Shelke said.
He said the police had arrested three more suspects and restored booty.
