Pune: This district is much better placed now in terms of critical covid parameters, such as patients on oxygen beds and ventilators than during the second wave early last year, the analysis by the district health department has revealed.
District data showed that while 14.1% of patients among the total active Covid cases were on oxygen support around 7 April 2021, (second wave peak), this percentage was only 0.58% now.
As many as 1,361 (1.4% of the total active case) patients were in an icus during the peak of the second wave of pandemic in the district, while this number established at 150 (0.20% of the total active case) now, comparative analysis shows.
Data also shows that only 91 patients today in the support of ventilators in Pune District opposed 1,792 around April 7 last year.
Dr.
Sanjay Deshmukh, Assistant Director, Health Services, Pune Region, told Tii, “During April 7-13 last year, Pune witnessed the highest cases during the second wave.
The maximum oxygen needs of Pune then are 341 metric tons (MT) per day .
Now, we are ready to meet the oxygen requirement of 1,000 mt per day.
However, at present, the requirements of the district OCYGEN only 80-90 mt per day.
Similar is the case with ICU beds and oxygen and ventilators, the availability has increased significantly since the period of the wave Second, but the current requirements are only 3-4% of total availability.
“Dr.
Deshmukh said not only increased infrastructure, but the ongoing waves are rather lighter than the previous surge is also the reason why critical resources are more available now.
Dr.
Dhanjay Kelarm, Medical Director of the Hospital Deenenath Mangeshkar, told Tii, “There were 22 patients at the ICU Hospital but only two-three were there because Covid.
The rest has landed in the ICU because of other diseases” with Covid “and not because of that.
The main reason behind this trend is that the variant that has triggered a relatively lighter current surge, sticks to the bronchus and not into the lungs alveoli.
