Pune: Three and a half years old leopard was found dead in Udapur Village near Otur in Junnar Taluka.
The well did not have a protective wall to prevent such an accident, forest officials said and added, the animal might have fallen in it when pursuing prey at night.
The incident was revealed when Dnayneshwar Chaudhari, a farmer, found the animal died in the well.
A Junnar forest official said at least 13 leopards had died in the same way since 2018.
Jayram Gowda, representative of the Junnar division forest conservator, said this was an accidental death.
“Many wells on the farm are open and built a few decades ago.
Preventing such death can be a challenge.
The local forest team has been told to keep in touch with farmers, who usually know the incident, to save animals,” Gowda said.
In some incidents, Gowda said that the forest team responded quickly and save animals from wells.
“We have developed the right mechanism to save animals.
Our team and local staff are very familiar with this procedure.
As a result, they can save the leopards safely in the range,” he added.
On August 30, a three-year-old boy suffered a thick injury to his neck and ears after he was attacked by leopards in Rajuri Village in Junnar Taluka while playing outside his home.
Junnar Forest Division has recorded 16 leopard attacks in humans in the past two years.
