PUNE: The Covid-induced lockdown has prompted many health-conscious people to take up cycling as a way to keep themselves fit.
On the other hand, some have put their cycles away, focusing on indoor methods of fitness.
Thus, cyclist Anand Vanjape, who has been promoting cycling for health and environmental reasons for the last decade, has launched the Pedal Mission initiative.
The mission collects such out of use cycles, repair them and donate them to the needy.
So far, they have collected 130 bicycles in Pune.
The initiative was conceptualized six months ago.
“Daily wage workers, domestic helps and other blue-collar employees have been relying on limited public transport facilities to get to their workplaces.
Our mission provides them with an efficient solution,” Vanjape said.
“It is an open-ended mission.
Inspired by Vanjape’s initiative, people from different parts of the country have seeked his guidane to set up a mission in their cities,” he said.
The mission accepts simple, non-geared and easy-to-maintain cycles so that the person it is donated to can easily afford the upkeep of it.
