Pune: A software engineer falls for an old online acquaintance trique that promises to send gifts and lose more than RS73 Lakh to a cheater.
The incident occurred in July.
The woman enrolled a complaint to the police Wakad on Wednesday.
Cases have been listed under the IPC 420 section (cheating) and the relevant part of the IT Law.
Senior Inspector Sanjay Tungar from Cybercrime Cell Pimbri Chinchwad told Ti that the woman met the suspect in the dating application in June.
“The suspect claims he is a medical practitioner based in Spain from India India,” said Tungar.
He said two cellphone numbers were exchanged and began to chat.
“In the first week of July, the man told the complainant that he sent a foreign currency worth RS1 Crore as a gift,” said Tungar.
A few days later, the man contacted the complainant and told him the package was stuck in customs at New Delhi Airport.
“He asked for a complainant to help get the package released by paying a fee.
The woman immediately transferred some money to the bank account number she gave her,” Tungar said.
Over the next eight days, he told the woman to make some transfers on various charges, fines and taxes.
“He transferred RS75.60 lakh to 19 accounts,” said Tungar.
