Pune: A total of 42 people were diagnosed with Mukormycosis (CAM) Covid-19 related in Pune District last week, took the total number of cases, over the past three months, up to 1,238.
The number of new cases has decreased, officials said.
In May, the district has recorded 421 cam cases.
In June, there were 375 new cases.
Of the 1,238 cases, 607 patients had fully recovered from invasive fungal infections which mainly attacked the sinus.
As many as 459 patients underwent treatment in various hospitals in this district.
“We reported an average of 120 new cam cases every week in the previous two months.
The weekly numbers have now fallen substantially, along with steep decreases in the Covid-19 case,” said a senior health official.
A total of 172 of 1,238 patients gave up, accounting for 13% mortality, which experts were far below the reported mortality rate – (at least 30% to a maximum of 50%) seen between the patient of the mucatorcosis before Covid.
Experts say rapid efforts by doctors and the use of available anti-muctic drugs such as posaconazole and isovuconazole are managed to maintain the death rate under control, although lack of important drugs such as amphotericin B.
Activists associated with cam are likely to be higher because Many patients cannot continue treatment in hospitals due to exorbitant costs and their deaths at home may not be reported.
They say that only long-term follow-up will be able to determine the actual toll road.
“Mucormycosis related covid is very different from pre-covid musormycosis,” said the Ashesh Bhumna ENT surgeon, who was in the country’s cam task force.
He said, “In post-covid musyrcosis, the patient immunocompetent and fighting fungi is very hard.
A number of patients are quite large and they are cured better.
In addition, the diagnosis is made very early and the treatment starts quickly.”
