Punjab saw 293 custodian deaths in three years

Chandigarh: A total of 13 cases of every death in police custody have been registered in Punjab and Haryana in the span of three years.
While Punjab has been registered as a total of 293 cases of custodian deaths, Haryana has recorded 198 and Himachal Pradesh 35.
From the death of Punjab, 13 was in police custody and 280 in detention of justice (prison).
Between 2018-19 and 2020-21, Haryana registered 13 deaths in police custody and 185 in court detention, while Himachal Pradesh recorded five deaths in police detention and 30 in prison.
The State Minister for the Affairs of Nityanand Rai’s house provides this information in parliament during the ongoing Monsun session.
All states and shared UTS have 348 deaths in police custody and 5,221 in prison.
Uttar Pradesh accounted for a maximum of 443 deaths in judicial detention, followed by West Bengal (177) and Bihar (156).
The Minister also cites the guidelines for the National Human Rights Commission that every death in detention (police or justice, naturally or vice versa) must be reported within 24 hours.
If the question by NHRC reveals negligence of civil servants, the Commission recommends that the central government or state begins to demand them.
Disciplinary actions must come from state governments as defined in the rules.
