Doha: Qatar warns Tuesday that it will not be responsible for Kabul Airport without the “clear” agreement with all involved, including the Taliban, about its operations.
Doha has been the main broker in Afghanistan after the withdrawal of US troops last month, helped evacuate thousands of foreigners and Afghans, involving the new Taliban rulers and supporting operations at Kabul Airport.
“We need to make sure that everything is intended very clearly if not …
we cannot take the airport responsibility (if) all these things are not intended,” Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani said at a press briefing.
“At present the status is still (below) negotiations.” Because of the US withdrawal, the Qatar Airways aircraft had carried out several trips to Kabul, flying in DOHA assistance and representatives and transporting foreign passport holders.
US intervention for two decades in Afghanistan ended with airlift rushing more than 120,000 people from Kabul when the Taliban returned to power.
The United States attracted his last troops from Afghanistan on August 30, ending the longest war just above the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks that pushed his invasion.
