LONDON: Rafael Benitez was fired as Everton manager on Sunday after only eight months responsible for the Premier League club struggling.
Benitez was an unpopular appointment in June last year after his long spell with Merseyside Everton rivals, Liverpool.
The Spaniard paid the price for nine gloomy defeats in the last 13 Everton league matches, peaking in losing 2-1 in Low Norwich on Saturday.
“Everton Football Club can confirm Rafael Benitez’s departure as the first team manager,” said the club’s statement.
“Benitez, who joined Everton in June 2021, had left the club with a direct effect.” Updates on permanent replacement will be carried out in time.
