Kanyakumari: Heavy rain has claimed the life of an elephant calf in Kanyakumari District in Tamil Nadu.
The male calf carcass was washed ashore in Kothaiku on the banks of the Kodayar river on Monday.
“The lung examination during the autopsy revealed that the animal was sinking,” said Officer Forest District (DFO) to Ti.
Betis is said to be part of a herd in the Koday area.
It can slip into the Kodayar reservoir or can be taken to the reservoir with flash floods.
When the window leaves of the umbar open dam, the carcass was brought to downstream, officials said.
DFO said the animal could die about 48 hours before it was seen in Kothaiku around 11am on Monday.
Aroud 2PM on Saturday, Tangedco officials at Kodungan Dam saw the carcass in the reservoir.
The forestry department personnel rushed to the dam area in about an hour but could not see the carcass as a dam window leaf still open due to heavy inflows.
“Two teams are looking down downstream the carcass on Sunday.
But the carcass was found on Monday morning,” Ilayaraja said.
Veterinarians from Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve reached the place and carried out an autopsy in front of DFO, assistant to forest conservator for forest Haleema and Shivakumar and Kwangekaram Range Officer Vijayakumar in the afternoon.
Although there is no external or suspicious injury to the carcass, the sample of vital organs is collected for forensic analysis.
