Bengaluru: Exceptional heavy rain for November in Karnataka has accumulated misery on farmers – they will definitely lose most of their rabbis plants – but have entertained in front of another: all 13 main dams are full or close.
Four main dams have reached 100% -mark and water is released in a “controlled” way.
Data on the Karnataka Disaster Management Center (KSNDMC) shows Krishnarajasagar (KRS), Kabini, Bhadra Dam and Tungabhadra are filled with capacity on Saturday.
Nine others, which include three hydel energy reservoirs, are almost 90% full.
Overall, Karnataka recorded 95% water storage in Cauvery and 92% basin in Krishna Basin on Sunday.
Although this is a reason to cheer, there is also worries that the release of heavy water, which is needed to ensure the structural safety of the dam, can cause downstream flooding.
However, officials have moved quickly to extinguish this fear, say the level of dam security both in parameters and floods is not possible.
“As far as regarding daily inflows and outflows, the inflow will go down so we don’t see the worries of flooding,” said Manoj Rajan, Commissioner of KSNDMC.
While insisting there was no flood threat, Tushar Girinath, the main secretary, the department of income, said “controlled” the release of water from the dam was a local decision.
“If we are in the middle of the rainy season, the flood concerns will be much higher.
But with rain on his last leg, the possibility that happens is far away,” said Girinath.
However, minor irrigation departments and departments are on high warnings due to full tanks and lakes and some violations have also been reported.
