Jaipur: Cancer Registry at City Stock Cancer Hospital under the National Cancer Registry Program shows that of 6,852 new patients registered by 2020, 1,856 are oral cancer and throat, which accounts for 29 percent of all cases.
According to different cancer hospitals here, the percentage of head and neck cancer ranges from 30% to 45% or even more if all types of cancer are taken collectively.
However, health experts claim that head and neck cancer burden can be reduced dramatically.
“We can prevent 80% of cases of head and neck cancer by simply disposing of tobacco consumption from our social system.
The general cause of 80% of head and neck cancer is tobacco consumption in the form of smoking or chewing,” said Dr.
Hemant Malhotra, Director of the Cancer Center in Mahatma Gandhi Medical College.
In the global adult tobacco survey (2) conducted by the Center, around 22.2% of men, 3.7% of women and 13.2% of all adults currently smoking tobacco.
Whereas, 22.0% of men, 5.8% of women and 14.1% of all adults currently use smokeless tobacco.
In addition, 39.6% of men, 9.0% of women and 24.7% of all adults smoking tobacco and / or using smokeless tobacco.
“If we want to reduce the case of cancer in the state, we must immediately increase the steps to prevent young people from eating tobacco.
The earlier they start consuming it, they will have more opportunities to get head and neck cancer, which is more common among men than With women.
During Covid, while people lived at home, tobacco consumption increased, “said Dr.
Pawan Singhal, professor ent, Sawai Man Singh Hospital, who carried out cancer surgery.
Women in rural areas are also vulnerable to head and neck cancer because they consume more tobacco than urban colleagues.
“Cases of head and neck cancer are found more in rural women because of smoking and tobacco habits compared to city women.
Previously, patients from cancer were used after the age of 35, while in recent years, this cancer is increasingly seen in adolescents at the age of 25 years , “said Dr.
Tej Prakash Soni, senior radiation oncologist at Bhagwan Mahavir Cancer Hospital.
Because most of the population in this country consumes tobacco, the risk of oral cancer is quite high.
Dr.
Nikhil Mehta, an Oncology Surgical Consultant, Fortis Escort Hospital said, “The most common mouth cancer site is the Buccal Alveolo complex.
Oral cancer is famous for its spread to the cervical lymph nodes.
Patients are usually reluctant to undergo surgery remembering changes in face architecture.
With Progress recently in head and neck cancer, it is feasible to reconstruct the face, mouth and tongue with free flap reconstruction.
It can be in the form of free fibula flap, anterolateral thigh flap or radial flap.
With this progress, patients can have normal speeches and swallow .
“Despite having treatment available, many patients come to hospitals at the face due to lack of consciousness.
“The survival rate of cancer in the first stage is 85 to 90 percent.
At the same time in the second stage, this tariff decreases to 65-70 percent.
The third and fourth stage is called the advanced stage.
The patient’s survival rate in the face is only 25 to 40 Percent, “said Dr.
Anil Gupta, a senior surgeon onco at Bhagwan Mahaveer Cancer Hospital.
