New Delhi: Google received 71,148 complaints from individual users in India in May and June combined, which resulted in deletion of content of more than 1.54 lakh content, according to the latest monthly transparency reports.
The number of complaints received in June from individual users in India is 36,265, which leads to 83,613 removal measures – both the amount is higher than the level seen in May.
In addition to reports from users, Google also removed more than 11.6 lakh content in May and June as a result of automatic detection, reports released on Friday showed.
The US-based company has made this disclosure as part of compliance with Indian IT rules that come into force on May 26.
In its inaugural report, Google has said that it has received more than 27,700 complaints in April this year from each user in India for alleged violations of local law or personal rights, which resulted in the removal of 59,350 kiping content.
On Friday, Google said it has received 34,883 complaints in May from each user located in India through a designated mechanism, and the number of removal actions as a result of user complaints is 71,132.
This complaint is related to third-party content which is believed to violate local laws or personal rights on the Google SSMI platform (significant social media intermediaries), he added.
Removal of content is carried out below several categories, including copyright (70,365), trademarks (753), false (5), other legal (4), orkering (3) and sexual content (2).
Google explains that one complaint can determine several items that have the potential to be related to the same or different content, and each unique URL in certain complaints is considered an individual “item” deleted.
In June, Google received 36,265 complaints – the highest so far – from individual users.
This eliminates 83,613 pieces of content as a result of user complaints in that month.
Content deleted during June was carried out under the same category as in May.
The copyright segment contributes to a large number of deleted content (83,054), trademarks (532), fake (14), jelizing (4), other legal (2), graphical sexual content (1) and defamation (1).
Three pieces of content removed under the imitation category and two under the court order in June.
Under the new IT rules, large digital platforms – with more than 5 million users – must publish periodic compliance reports every month, mention the details of the complaints received and the actions taken.
The report must also include the number of specific communication links or part of the information that is removed by intermediaries or deactivating access to in accordance with proactive monitoring carried out using the automatic tool.
The report shows that Google has removed 6,34,357 pieces of content in May and 5,26,866 in June as a result of automatic detection.
This data is a new addition to compliance reports.
Talking about automatic detection, Google said it would have invested a lot in fighting dangerous content online and using technology to detect and delete it from the platform (including YouTube).
“This includes using the automatic detection process for some of our products to prevent the spread of malicious content such as child sexual harassment and harsh extremist content.
Automatic detection allows us to act faster and accurate to enforce our guidelines and policies,” said the company.
This removal action can cause the content or end the access of bad actors to Google services.
Automatic detection volume is close to 10 times the user complaints, the company said.
Google has published transparency reports since 2010 which provided details about the government’s request for the transfer of content based on biennials.
The company also reported a series of Youtube content every quarter.
