Istanbul: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday replaces the Chancellor of the University of Istanbul Atop whose controversial appointment caused the months of protests led by students against his government.
Erdogan pointed at the feathers as the Chancellor of the Bogazici University in January but immediately met with anger for the influence of the President in educational institutions.
But in the announcement published by the official Gazette, Erdogan fired feathers.
The President did not give a reason for his dismissal and did not mention the name of the replacement.
Protests by students and academics immediately began in January and continued until now.
Dozens were detained while others were subject to police raids when officers who were persecuted by Erdogan’s anger responded heavily against protests.
While demonstrations were not so attended as before, Bogazici academics showed that they were still very unhappy by continuing to change their backs regularly as a protest in front of the Chancellor’s Office.
Feathers ran as candidates in the 2015 election for Erdogan’s ruling parties.
Critics blazed the appointment as an example of political disorders in the Turkish education sector by Erdogan, who assumed the power to appoint the Chancellor after undergoing a failed coup in 2016.
Before July 2016, the university chancellor was appointed through the election.
Many Turks see the appointment and reaction of the government as part of a wider Push Erdogan to seize control of various parts of the daily life of Turks.
The dispute over the Chancellor increased after the protesters hung poster near his office covered in the LGBT image.
Officials immediately closed the club LGBT Bogazici and Erdogan targeting the community, releasing attacks on “The LGBT Youth”.
The club said in an Instagram post on Thursday it would continue to protest until it was allowed to be reopened.
