Voluntary network Citizen Suchi Mitra to manage garbage collection door-to-door is turned on again.
This time it was announced by the main minister as part of the Bengaluru 2022 mission program
Suchi Mitras, the bottom-up network of residents’ volunteers to ensure that garbage is collected at the source, formed at every level of the environment, zone and constituency in the city.
Similar programs to involve citizens in overcoming local problems about the collection of door-to-door waste, cleaning the trash and sweeping the roads etc.
tried in 2016.
However, failing to take off due to strong resistance from corporators and contractors.
This time, The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and a group of solid waste management experts hoped that the program would be successful because it was announced with no other than the Chairman of the BS Yediyurappa Minister as part of Bengaluru’s 2022 mission program.
To overcome it, BBMP also does not have a selected board.

At present, the corporation is in the process of identifying volunteers who can work at different levels, both in blocks or zonal levels.
Learned that around 650 residents had registered in a program that began in January this year but was detained because Covid.
BBMP is looking for more volunteers because there are around 4,500 blocks in the city, each consisting of 750 houses.
More than 3,000 volunteers have enrolled in the BBMP citizen involvement program in 2016.
Volunteer responsibilities include tracking block performance on separation, tracking complaints received from the BBMP application, monitor the performance of door waste to doors in the neighborhood, identify the gap in the system and is responsible for the environmental level of citizen participation programs.
They also have to identify black spots.
Once ‘Suchi Mitras’ completed six months in work, BBMP would give them a jacket and badge.
Sarfaraz Khan, who recently increased as Executive Director of Bengaluru Solid Management Management Company Ltd., said the program was almost ready to start.
“Suchi Mitras will help BBMP in dealing with solid waste problems.
Because the environmental committee is in place, it makes sense to have a group of ground-up volunteers who can help us streamline the waste collection system,” he said.
The involvement of active citizens at the environmental level can also carry light details such as contractors have provided a number of adequate vehicles for waste collection according to tender conditions and understanding if the collection of waste occurs every day of the week.
Sandhya Narayan, a solid waste management expert, said many volunteers, who have registered in 2016, are active in their ward for the past 5 to 6 years but new programs will give them formal entries.
“Last time, we did not get a lot of political support.
Board members were not happy that the volunteers asked many questions about the management of waste,” he said.
“New efforts to involve residents will be successful if the minister becomes his face.
There are no contractors or council members who dare to oppose the program,” he said.
Sandeep Anirudhan, founder of the residents’ agenda for Bengaluru suggested a program that complements the new BMP initiative to build a voluntary network.
“The Civic’s body must conduct environmental level competition to assess cleanliness, cleanliness and sanitation that is similar to the Survekshan Swasch survey conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs,” he said.
This, he said, will motivate people to improve segregation and ensure their ward is clean visually.
