New Delhi: In a significant recommendation, parliamentary panels on Thursday urged the government to rebound the Indus (IWT) water agreement (IWT) with Pakistan, noting that urgent problems such as climate change, global warming and environmental impact assessment of the pact that divides Indus waters .
The fixed committee on water resources said the agreement was framed on the basis of the knowledge and technology that existed in 1960 when the perspective of the two countries was only limited to river management and the use of water through the construction of dam, homing-power, canals and hydro-power generations.
Any advice of “renogotation” IWT is seen in political light and cannot be welcomed in Pakistan.
Even though India has not moved to change it, PM Narendra Modi has done a proposal to further develop the use of Indian shares after border tensions with Pakistan at the beginning of PM.
The panel recommends that the government examine the feasibility of using the maximum use of the provisions of the agreement in terms of “full use of all water that can be accessed from the eastern river and the maximum utilization of irrigation and electric water potential, including water storage permitted”.
“There is a need to rebound the agreement to build institutional structures or legislative frameworks to overcome the effects of climate change on water availability and other challenges,” Panel said, led by BJP Lok Sabay Member Sanjay Jaiswal.
The committee submits its report on flood management in the country through various steps including international agreements and water agreements with Pakistan, China and Bhutan.
