‘Repair rainwater harvesting system before monsoon’

Gurgaon: The municipal corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) along with GuruJal inspected 413 rainwater harvesting structures in the city on Monday and concluded that 274 of them require repair ahead of monsoons, said Jaspreet Kaur, the additional commissioner of MCG.
Kaur, during a video conference meeting, instructed officials to complete the repair work before monsoons arrive.
Kaur said that new rainwater harvesting structures will be set up soon and also instructed the officials that signboards should be installed at all rainwater harvesting structures by June 25.
“Teams should be constituted to review rainwater harvesting structures in the private colonies,” she added.
The district administration also directed the residential societies, institutions, schools and other establishments to ensure proper functioning of the rainwater harvesting system on their premises by June 15.
The establishments where the rainwater harvesting systems are found non-functional will be penalised, said officials.
It was in March in a meeting of the administration officials and GuruJal society that it was decided teams will conduct an enforcement drive to check whether the existing rainwater harvesting systems are working properly or not.
“As per clause 8.1 (2) of Haryana Building code, recharging of ground water shall be mandatory not only for residential buildings but for all types of buildings including group housing societies having a plot area more than 500 square meters and above,” read the notice issued by the deputy commissioner Dr Yash Garg.
GuruJal had also conducted a survey in September last year and found that 135 of the total 413 pits in 57 sectors of Gurgaon need to be fixed.
The survey had also found that while 77 rainwater harvesting structures needed to be replaced completely, 58 could be repaired.
