Reporting of tuberculosis cases in India fell 41% because Covid: WHO reports

Geneva: Reporting of tuberculosis cases in India fell 41% between 2019 and 2020 due to Covid-19 pandemic, according to Global TB WHO 2021 report released on Thursday.
India, followed by Indonesia (14%), the Philippines (12%) and China (8%) are four countries that contribute the greatest to global reduction in TB notifications between 2019 and 2020.

In its annual report on TB, the UN health agency said 1.5 million people worldwide died due to last year’s bacterial disease, a slight increase from 1.4 million deaths in 2019.

The report said the number of newly diagnosed people with TB and those reported to the National Government fell to 5.8 million by 2020 from 7.1 million in 2019.
