Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu Postgraduate Teacher Association has urged the state government to increase the number of seats provided for vocational school students at affiliated colleges from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU).
Meanwhile only 5% of seats allocated for these students at TNAU Constituent Universities, the Association asked the government to extend reservations to private agricultural colleges under TNAU, where students from the vocational school did not meet the requirements to join.
There are more than 300 government schools and several private and assisted schools in all states offering vocational schools with agricultural sciences as the main subject.
Graduates in agriculture and horticulture programs are recruited as teachers in these schools.
Candidates who pass class XII under the vocational school and study biology, agricultural science theory, agriculture – practical technology and computers because vocational subjects are qualified to apply for Agriculture BSC (Hons.) Horticulture, BSC (Hons.) Forestry and BTECH (technique Agriculture).
“While these programs are offered by Constituent Universities under TNAU, only 5% of seats are provided for students from vocational schools.
The remaining seats are filled with students in the flow of science,” said M Madhavan, president of the association.
“While these students are studying agricultural science as their subject, they must be considered eligible to be registered in these programs.” A senior TNAU official said the 5% reservation was in 1984 mode based on government orders.
“Private Universities do not register students from vocational schools when students who get fewer grades in class X are registered in vocational schools in class XI.
