Baghdad: The roadside bomb attack targets the outskirts of Baghdad Monday, killing at least 18 people and injuring others in the crowded market, said two Iraqi security officials.
The attack took place at Sadr City, the official said.
They speak with the terms of anonymity in line with regulations.
It happened the day before the Eid al-Adha holiday when the market was busy with buyers.
The piles of merchandise lay on the ground after the explosion.
The shop owners told the security forces how the explosion occurred when they saved what items they could.
There is no claim of immediate responsibility but the group of Islamic countries has claimed a similar attack in the area before.
Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi put the commander of the Federal Police Regiment responsible for the market area under the arrest, according to the Iraqi military statement.
He also said the investigation was launched.
It was the third time this year that a bomb crashed into the market in a densely populated environment.
In April, at least four people were killed in a car bomb attack on Sadr City.
The explosion was caused by explosives installed in the car parked on the market.
