LONDON: Roger Federer became the oldest man in 46 years to reach the third round of Wimbledon on Thursday with a direct victory over Richard Gasquet.
Federer, 39, defeated his French rival 7-6 (7/1), 6-1, 6-4 to make the last 32 for the 18th time.
Ken Rosewall Australia is 40 years old when he made the third round at the All England club in 1975.
Federer, who has eight Wimbledon titles, defeated Gasquet for the 19th in 21 meetings and will face Cameron Norrie from England for the last place 16.
” I know Richard very well, we have played many times with each other.
Always fun playing against it, “Federer said.
“It’s an amazing match, I’m happy with my appearance.
The first set is hard, I’m happy with the second set and I’m better at the third, so I’m very happy.” Federer admitted the crowd of central courts may have divided loyalty when he faced 25-year-old Norrie for a place in the last 16 years.
“I hope the crowd will discuss it regardless of whether they are for him or me for the past 20 years,” Federer said.
“Cam is a nice man and has a wonderful year.
He has done it well here but it’s time for him to come out!”
