Kolkata: With a pandemic still active and a new variant in prey, it is time to introduce a third shot, after two covid vaccine doses, which will help curb transmissions, feel experts.
The National Technical Advisory Group of Immunization Meets Monday to make decisions about giving the third dose for individuals compromised to immunity.
The third dose can be introduced as an additional vaccine and not a booster dose, the members said.
The third vaccine must be opened immediately for elderly workers and health care and not only for those who are compromised by Immuno, said Professor Ipgmer Diplipra Sarkar.
“It will help protect high-risk groups.
But it is still unclear how far the third vaccine will be effective because there are no credible studies Covaxin, “said Sarkar.
He added a study published in Lancet in a small group of people, who had taken covishield, showing it might remain effective for about a year.
“But this research is not wide enough for conclusive evidence,” he said.
The third vaccine was the way forward, especially for those who took shots before April, said the Director of the King Dhar CMRI Pulmonology Hospital.
Sarkar said the third shot runs the risk of failure because Omicron is in prey.
“Our vaccine must provide significant protection, but there is a possibility that omicron makes it less than 50% effective.
But it is so vaccination, cells, cell B, memory cells continue to provide resistance,” he said.
A study in the UK found two doses of PFIZER / BONTECH vaccines were 88% effective after one month, which fell to 74% after five or six months.
The Oxford / AstraZeneca version decreased from 77% to 67% effective.
Moderna found a case among people who were fully vaccinated soaring from 88 of 11,431 people, who received their second dose between December and March, up to 162 of 16,747 people vaccinated five months earlier, a surge of around 36%.
Pfizer revealed the vaccine decreased from 96% to 83.7% effective after four months.
Antibodies are not the only obstacles provided by the vaccine, said the Internal Medicine Consultant Arindam Biswas.
“While the third vaccine is needed, those who have double shots do not need to panic now,” he said.
