New Delhi: Customs officers have presented more heroin values ​​than Rs 600 Crore smuggled into the country at the International Airport here in the last six months, officials said on Monday.
As many as 20 were accused of 18 foreigners and two Indians, arrested in 14 cases registered between December 2020 and June this year, they said.
About 86 kg of heroin, it is estimated to be worth more than the RS 600 Crore in the international market, confiscated in these cases, officials said.
Of the 20 foreigners, six are citizens of Afghanistan and 12 from African countries including Uganda, Zambia, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi and South Africa.
Recently seizures are the result of an increase in supervision at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) installed by customs officials.
“This is an unprecedented seizure at the airport and the results of an increase in supervision managed by the formation of the field under the supervision of senior officials, responsible for IGI airport.
All officers alert all the time to examine each smuggling incident at the airport,” said a senior officer , credit success for “team efforts”.
He said the seizure signifies a worrying request for contraband goods in India, especially when regular international flights are suspended due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Providing details of one of the biggest seizures affected last month, the officer said the heroin worth RS 126 Crore was confiscated from two South African men at the airport.
Duo was intercepted on June 27 after their arrival from Johannesburg through Doha, he said.
